In our self esteem counseling we define your self-esteem as how much you respect yourself, how desirable or worthy you feel, and how confident you are that you can face life’s challenges. When you have strong self-esteem, you feel that you can accomplish your goals, and you expect others to treat you with the dignity and respect that everyone deserves.
When you have weak or low self-esteem, rather than respecting yourself you talk down to yourself. Instead of feeling desirable, you feel ashamed; instead of believing you can accomplish your desires, you feel powerless. This feeling of worthlessness and lack of control grows into feelings of vulnerability, loneliness, and guilt.
Causes of Low Self-esteem
You began developing your self-esteem in early childhood. When your parents praised you for your successes or when you accomplished a difficult task, your self-esteem grew. On the other hand, when your hard work was unappreciated or when you were left alone or unappreciated, your self-esteem was damaged.
Symptoms of Low Self-esteem
This lack of self-esteem can often lead to other complications, each of which can further damage your self-esteem. The following conditions are often associated with a damaged self-esteem:
Social or general anxiety
Shame and unnecessary guilt
Feeling inadequate or powerless
In addition, people with low self-esteem are vulnerable to physical, sexual and emotional abuse. This self-perpetuating cycle leaves its victim unable to escape alone.
There is hope and help available!
Naya Clinics counselors employ various counseling services for self-esteem recovery. The most obvious sign of a low self-esteem is negative self-talk. Our clients with damaged self-esteem constantly compare themselves to others and then criticize themselves based on those—naturally shallow—criteria.
This negative self-talk is rarely true, and even when it is, it is often exaggerated or twisted in a negative light. When counseling low self-esteem, we strive to help our clients recognize the pervasive frequency of these thoughts, and to see the inaccuracies of the messages. You would never say some of these things to another person, even if you haven’t had counseling for self-esteem issues.
So, whether it’s counseling students with low self-esteem, running self-esteem group counseling, or simply being a positive voice, we have the self-esteem counseling techniques to help you gain the confidence you need. Just as the image of yourself can be shattered by negative self-talk, we can teach you how to fill your mind with positive self-talk. What will you accomplish when you believe in yourself again?
